EIGHT YEARS LATER - THE REFRIGERATOR STILL HAS NOT BEEN DUG UP
- Search Warrant executed by Cumberland County Sheriff's Department on Hulon Street in Hope Mills.
- Quoting the warrant: ‘...there is probable cause to believe that a refrigerator containing the human remains of Kent Jacobs is buried on the property belonging to Gregory Leonard Jones.’
- Search cut off early due to environmental concerns on property.
- [Two days after the search] Dennis Mahon meets Det. Trogdon at the Cumberland County Library downtown and Det. Trogdon says, ‘There is no way Kent Jacobs is not on that property.’
June 2010 - Only 60% Searched...
- In both emails and phone conversations, Det. Trogdon tells Dennis Mahon:
- Only about 60% of the yard was searched that day.
- It should only be a matter of a few weeks before they can get back on the property. At issue was to see if they could get the the ‘Nuisance and Abatement’ department to declare the Hulon property an ‘Environmental Hazard Area’ which would legally assign costs of any ‘cleanup’ to the homeowner.
- Dennis meets with Det. Trogdon at the Sheriff’s Department. Det. Trogdon says they can now no longer get back on the property unless they have brand new evidence because everything she had was included in the initial search warrant.
- She then said if the Environmental Agency could get on the property, they could request Law Enforcement security for protection and Det. Trogdon would gladly be the person working that assignment if it were ever to happen.
April 2011 - Eight Months Later...
- Months go by and all we are hearing is total silence. Nothing seems to be happening. Dennis Mahon contacts two people:
- Linda Culpepper from the EPA in Raleigh, NC
- Dennis Shackleford - from the Dept. of Natural Resources in Fayetteville, NC
- Dennis Shackleford informs Dennis Mahon of four key points:
- No one from the Sheriff’s Department ever contacted them regarding the Hulon Street property.
- Even if they did, they would never interfere with any Law Enforcement activity.
- The Sheriff’s Department is welcome to dig all day long as far as they were concerned.
- His department would gladly send a representative to assist the Sheriff’s Department if requested.
September 2011- Dr. Oliver
- Dennis Mahon speaks with Dr. Billy Oliver on the phone. (Dr. Oliver is the person with the NC State Geological Department who operated the GPR equipment for the Search Warrant that day.)
- Dr. Oliver told me not every area was checked.
- In a subsequent email, Dr. Oliver offered his services to return to the Hulon property to complete the job.
February 2017- Lt. Kimberly Gagnon
- Dennis Mahon contacts Lt. Kim Gagnon and shares concerns about the Hulon property.
- Lt. Gagnon emails Mahon on February 9th: ‘I am still looking into it.’
- No further word from Lt. Gagnon.
March 2018- Det. Roberto Reyes
- Dennis Mahon contacts Sheriff Ennis Wright’s office regarding Hulon.
- Det. Reyes returns my call.
- I send Det. Reyes a complete summary - very similar to this one - just formatted differently.
April 2018 - ‘The Lead Has Been Checked Out’
- Det. Reyes emails Dennis Mahon and says the Hulon lead has been checked out.
Closing Summary
- Det. Reyes says the lead has already been checked out.
- Det. Trogdon says only about 60.00% of the yard was searched.
- Dr. Billy Oliver says the yard was not completely searched and he has offered to return to finish the job.
- Both the EPA and the NC Dept. of Natural Resources say they were never contacted by the Sheriff’s Department regarding the Hulon property.
