Heather Thrash-Monroe
Heather, Heather, Heather. What to make of Heather?
A few years ago, there was a knock on the Jacobs front door in Hope MIlls. Kenneth Tew was on their porch because he had information he felt the Jacobs needed to be made aware of.
At the time, Kenny was a landlord who had some trailers to rent in Fayetteville and he rented one of them out to Heather.
As time went on, Kenny and Heather got to know each other better and better. Out of this bonding in trust, Heather begins to open up and one day she shares with Kenny a story about how she witnessed Kent Jacobs' tragedy.
Kenny did absolutely the right thing and notified the Jacobs family and spoke to the cops. More than that, Kenny told Heather she needed to do the right thing and come forward herself.
At Kenny's prodding, Heather agreed to do so and she met with the Cumberland County Sheriff's department and even agreed to be interviewed by WTVD. During the TV interview, she requested her identity be concealed. You can see the TV interview on this page.
Cops are not stupid. They have innate BS sensors and they have told the Jacobs that Heather is not credible. I am told that she took a polygraph and she either failed it or the results came back 'inconclusive'.
Heather claims the reason she did badly on the poly was because she was super stressed out, had not slept for a few days and was on prescription meds at the time.
"I went into a deep depression over this, Dennis", she said to me.
I moved to Hope MIlls in late September of 2009. One of the first things I did upon arriving in town was to meet up with Heather. I asked her if I could buy her dinner and talk about Kent. She agreed and said she loved the Olive Garden so I picked her up and we headed towards McPherson Church Road.
We get there and the place was just jam-packed so we changed plans and headed back to Hope Mills and settled on Taco Bell near the WalMart.
So, over fast-food, Mexican style, Heather told me the following details. The date was October 15th, 2009, around 9:00pm:
1. The Godwins are real bad addicts and they just steal for a living.
2. Pierre Scurlock put a gun to Kent's head and shot him.
3. They killed Kent because they thought it was his 'check' day and that he had alot of money on him.
4. She gave Kent CPR.
5. Slick, aka "PK" helped move Kent's body. She did not know 'Slick's" real name.
5a: Slick told Pierre to 'beat' but not 'kill' Kent.
6. They used Slick's Cadillac (Burgundy or Green) to transport Kent.
7. They put Kent in a creek that leads out to the Cape Fear River.
8. The shooting happened in a trailer at the end of Muscat Lane. (Near Brisson Rd). Note: That trailer has since been taken off the property.
9. Lamonte Franklin, Jessica Kiser and Tabitha McDowell were also there.
10. Note: Jessica admits to being there. Tabitha denies it. I have not spoken with LaMonte Franklin.
11. Heather did not tell police about Tabitha because she said Tabitha was not dealing very well with it and she wanted to protect her. Tabitha was only about 13 years old at the time.
12. Pierre Scurlock does not feel bad about it
Remember, the Cumberland County Sheriff's department spend every day of their lives working with criminal elements in our community. They can pretty much tell when someone's story checks out and when it doesn't. To put it bluntly: They do not believe Heather.
That begs the question as to why Heather would do such a thing? Why do this to the Jacobs family? Who knows? However, there is no way around it: some of the things she is saying checks out to a 'T' with what we are hearing elsewhere.
It may just be a case of the same rumors swirling around the same crowd of addicts. It could be as simple as that.
I personally believe Heather's story is a mixture of some facts tossed into a bucket full of imagination and clouded by years of drug and prescription pill abuse. But in this cloud of despair, there is some truth.
As for me, where there is smoke there is fire.
